BODRUM ANTIQUE THEATER

Brief History;

Antique Theater It corresponds to the southern slope of Göktepe, which is located in the north of the ancient city of Halicarnassus and was used as a necropolis. B.C. This magnificent building, which is dated to the 4th century, reflects all the features of theaters before the Roman Imperial Age.

Theater can be considered in three parts.

Seating Rows (Cavea) Section:

Although the lower part has survived to the present day, the upper part is in a dilapidated state due to the destruction of nature and people. The rows of seats are further divided into 12 sections by 11 vertical stairs (Kerkides). These horizontal and vertical transitions were made to facilitate the filling and emptying of the theater. The sitting area is larger than a semi-circle, indicating that it is one of the oldest stone theaters.

Orchestral Section:

It is located in the middle of the theater and was made larger than a semi-circle in accordance with the seating area. The altar in the middle, just in front of the rows of seats, was placed for offerings to Dionyssos, a god who emerged in Anatolia. Towards the end of the Roman Age, gladiator and wild animal fights were held in such theaters. Here, too, it is possible to see the remnants of the balustrade separating the spectators from the fighters.

Stage Structure:

It is located in the southern part of the theatre. It was built to cover the open part of the horseshoe-shaped seating area. It is a rectangular structure. It can be seen that it is a two-storey structure and there is a podium in front of the stage facing the orchestra. On the wall at the back of this section, cavities can be seen on which portable decorative plates are hung, depending on the game to be played. The doors in the stage structure are the doors used by the actors and protocol in the game. The entrances (Parados) located between the stage building and the sitting area are reserved for the entrances and exits of the audience.

The Ancient Theater is the only structure that has survived from Bodrum in the Classical Age and is one of the oldest theaters in Anatolia. Restored by a group of Turks in the 1960s, this theater has been hosting many festivals in Bodrum since 2002. BODRUM MAUSOLEUM ANCIENT MUSEUM

A brief history of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World;

Maussollos, who was the satrap of Caria for 24 years, started to have a tomb monument built for himself in order to maintain the magnificence of his power after his death. However, Maussollos could not see the end of the tomb. It was continued by his wife after his death in 353. In the construction of the Mausoleum, the most famous sculptors and architects of the period were worked with, marbles brought from the island of Prokonnessos (Marmara) and green stones brought from the quarry in Bodrum Koyunbaba Mevkii were used.

The structure is so magnificent that ancient writers refer to it as one of the “Seven Wonders of the World”. So much so that the source of the word Mausoleum, which is used for mausoleums today, comes from “Maussolleion”.

The names of two architects are mentioned in the construction of the Mausoleum. The first of these was Pytheos, who was also the architect of the Priene Athena Temple. Another architect is Satyros. According to ancient texts, Pytheos used such exquisite craftsmanship in his construction techniques that there was no need for additional decoration. The tomb, which was built on a terrace measuring 105×242 meters, consists of four main parts. There is a high podium at the bottom, a section with 36 Ionic columns on it, a 24-step roof covering this section, and the statues of Maussollos and Artemisia in the Quadriga (four-horse chariot) at the top.The height of the monument is approximately 50 meters in this form.

BODRUM CASTLE

Brief History;

Bodrum Castle was built by the Knights of Saint Jean between 1406-1522 on a rocky peninsula surrounded by sea on three sides, between two ports. It has a square plan and measures 180 x 185 meters.

In the construction of the castle, they used the stones of Mausoleion, one of the seven wonders of the world, which was destroyed in the earthquake. There are French, Italian, English, German and Spanish (Serpentine) towers in the castle. The highest tower is the French Tower, which is 47.50 meters above sea level.

BODRUM UNDERWATER ARCHEOLOGY MUSEUM

Brief History;

Bodrum Underwater Archeology Museum is located in Bodrum Castle. In 1960, when George F. Bass brought the artifacts from the Antalya-Finike-Gelidonya Shipwreck to the castle, a museum warehouse was created in the castle. With the appointment of Haluk Elbe, the museum was organized and opened to visitors on 6 November 1964 under the name “Bodrum Museum”. Due to the fact that most of the works exhibited in the Bodrum Museum are underwater finds, it was named “Bodrum Underwater Archeology Museum” on March 25, 1981. Bodrum Underwater Archeology Museum is the first and only underwater archeology museum in our country and one of the few underwater archeology museums in the world.

Amphora Park is located under the veranda of the main outer walls on the left side of the entrance to the castle. The largest collection of artifacts in Bodrum Underwater Archeology Museum are amphorae. The Ax Tower, located next to the cross vault, is the “Queen Island” hall. Finds from a foundation excavation in Bodrum are exhibited here.

In addition, there is an open-air exhibition consisting of finds from the Bodrum peninsula and the Caria region in the middle garden of Bodrum Castle, which was established on a land of 33.5 decares. MYNDOS GATE

Brief History ;

It is thought that the Myndos Gate was built in 360 BC. It is one of the entrance gates of the city, to the west of Halicarnassus. The Myndos Gate, which was built on the city walls by the Carian Satrap Maussolos, protected Halicarnassus from enemy incursions and became a shield to the city against attacks. The Myndos Gate, which rises next to the Gumbet cemetery today, is one of the two known monumental gates built for defense purposes. It was named Myndos Gate because it opened the road to Gümüşlük. Unfortunately, the other one of these gates, the Mylasa Gate, has not survived.

OTTOMAN TOWER AND SHIPYARD

BODRUM MARITIME MUSEUM

Brief History;

For the first time in October 2010, within the scope of Bodrum Yacht Festival, a set that briefly describes Bodrum’s values in a tent set up in front of Bodrum Castle, started with an exhibition where 18 meticulously made “Bodrum type” boat models were presented. With the project leadership of the Bodrum Chamber of Commerce and the significant contributions of the Bodrum Municipality, the project took place as the Museum Project Promotional Exhibitions, and was opened to the public on October 15, 2011, after the old covered bazaar building in the center of Bodrum was allocated as a museum.

In the project, which started with the construction of the original models of the “Bodrum type” boats, which have an important place in the economic, social and cultural life of the region in Bodrum, by the great master of Bodrum, Ali Kemal Denizaslanı, 48 model boats are currently on display.

In the special section on the upper floor of the museum, the very valuable and rich “Hasan Güleşçi Seashells Collection”, which Hasan Güleşçi collected from various parts of the world over a 40-year period, opened to visitors as of December 23, 2011, is presented.

In the “Cevat Şakir Kabaağaçlı Collection” section, Kabaağaçlı’s information starting with his family tree, his infancy, frames from his life with special photographs selected from his family album, historical documents, his writings, paintings and personal belongings are exhibited.

BODRUM WINDMILLS

Brief History ;

Windmills located in different parts of Bodrum are among the important structures that reflect the historical and cultural texture of the region. Located in regions such as Gümbet, Ortakent, Gürece, Gümüşlük and Yalıkavak, these mills were built to use Bodrum’s wind efficiently.

According to historical sources, the first windmill was seen in Seistan, on the Iran-Afghanistan border, dated to 644 AD. After that, it was used for irrigation of rice fields in China between 750-850 AD. Windmills that emerged in the east in the following years were developed in the west and these mills were brought to a horizontal axis position. The first horizontal axis windmill in history was built towards the end of the 12th century during the Normandy Kingdom.

Windmills in Bodrum were first built in the 1850s. Today, some of the windmills can be examined by going inside. Although the writings on the mills have been erased over time, it is stated that some writings can still be seen in the spring months. Observing these ancient structures up close is a beautiful experience. With the transition to motor power after the 1970s, windmills became dysfunctional. Wind electricity was produced by the Danish Prof. Paul la Cour in 1891 using the windmill.

Windmills, which are frequently seen in Bodrum and Milas districts of Muğla province, are made of cut or rubble stone with cylindrical bodies. The top of the mill is covered with a wooden conical roof. The main walls were usually whitewashed and sometimes the stone body was left intact. The windmills are entered through a simple round arched door. The interior is illuminated by the small-sized crenellated windows on the walls. In addition, wooden floors were built inside, and a millstone and a mechanism that grinds wheat was placed on the floor. In some examples, there are also flour warehouses next to or inside the mill.

ZEKİ MÜREN MUSEUM

Brief History;

Zeki Müren bought his house, which is now a museum, from sociologist Fatma Mansur in 1977. It was restored by the Ministry of Culture on 08 June 2000, turned into a museum and opened to visitors.

The artist’s house has two floors and there is a garden at the front and the back. There is a large terrace at the entrance of the house, which is reached by a stone staircase. In the middle of the terrace decorated with small stones, there is a pentagon decorated with bee, sail and flower motifs. Since the artist used only the lower floor of the house while he was alive, the lower floor was decorated as the artist lived, while the upper floor was given the appearance of a museum.

Zeki Müren used to spend most of his time in the living room, which he took care to be very simple. Here he would write his poems, read his newspapers and host his guests in this room. In the winter, the fireplace was lit. The vases on the fireplace were sent from Japan by a fan.

The oil painting on the fireplace has the date of 1329 in Ottoman Turkish. All of the items in the room are original and are the items used by the artist during his health. Only the curtains were made later in accordance with the original.

The artist brought the bedroom from his house in Istanbul. The bedroom has been taken care of and put on display. All the items in the showcases were used by the artist, and his photographs, costumes and awards are exhibited on the upper floor.
